SCAR ID --- 2018 --- ANIMATION. CODING. PROJECTION. INSTALLATION ---

‘Scar ID’ is an interactive installation piece representing immigrant entry into the United States during the height of tuberculosis in various countries. There were two sets of vaccinations that left permanent marks on an individual’s upper arm around this time. These were from the smallpox vaccine that is only found on Americans that were born before 1972, and the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine against tuberculosis which was never routinely administered in the United States. However, immigrants entering the United States were required to show proof of receiving the BCG vaccination for access and residency status. The scar from this latter has become a physical marker for the sense of foreignness that many first-generation Americans feel. It is a mark that separates immigrant children from multi-generational American peers while simultaneously creating solidarity among foreign-born residents.

This piece has two components - a scanner to trigger video play and a screen projection that displays the video.

The video consists of information such as the digital illustration of each person’s scar, original photo of their scar, the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin application methods, chart of the immigrant population of their home country in the United States, messages from the World Health Organization or the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and more. Video includes the BCG vaccine scars of participants that are Cambodian-born, Mexican-born, and Indonesian-born.

AYO MAKAN! --- 2021 --- ILLUSTRATION. GRAPHIC DESIGN. PHOTOGRAPHY. WEB DESIGN. EDITORIAL DESIGN ---

Collaborating as a sister duo born in Indonesia and raised in America, we toyed with this project idea as a way to spend time with our grandmother when she came to visit us in the U.S.

Published on Ayo Makan’s website and Instagram account (on hiatus), each recipe is written in Indonesian and translated into English. This project was an opportunity to connect with the Indonesian community, especially those part of the diaspora. The ‘Ayo Makan! Offline’ cookzine features five Indonesian dessert and snack recipes written in both English and Bahasa Indonesia. Included is information on different traditional food topics. We have distributed the cookzine to public institutions and individuals as a free, permanent learning resource.
